Poisons of the World – Music

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

Whoa, whoa whoa, back this track up! Music is a bad thing? But you play the piano!

Alright bucko, hear me out on this one. Let me first start by saying that I think music is a wonderful thing, without which the world would be far less exciting to live in. However, that is not to say that music is fault-free.

The Problem

Music is a stimulant in that it activates certain parts of the brain. There was a time during my teenage years, where I would listen to music almost all day long. I even had an album playing softly in the background while I slept, because weirdly enough I was able to relax to heavy metal.

The thing is though I felt sluggish quite frequently as a teen, and I eventually realised it was because my brain was overstimulated. Now music itself was not entirely to blame for this hyperactivity in my mind, but it was a contributing factor.

Humans need silence.

The Solution

Silence has its own rhythm. Sometimes the brain resonates better with music, but other times, it harmonises with silence. Sometimes music can help, but other times it may be a hindrance. I noticed when I reduced the overall time I spent listening to music, it improved my concentration.

The solution, therefore, is to moderate the time spent listening to music. Balance is the key.

Conclusion

I haven’t even touched on musical genres, and lyrical content in terms of potential harm music can bring. Music is highly influential, and unfortunately, in some cases, that influence can lead people down a wrong path.

This article was solely focused on the relationship of the stimulus music brings to the brain and how overuse can lead to hyperactivity which can then cause lethargy through overload. So remember not to play music practically all the time like I used to.
