Mastermind – Finish what you Start

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

Throughout my life, all around me, there have been many instances where people have failed to finish what they started. Whether it be a personal development project, or taking up a new activity, they quit half-way.

In this article, I want to talk about seeing things through to the end.

Discussion

If you have read my articles on willpowermotivation, and procrastination, you will understand the main reasons why so many people fail to accomplish what they set out to achieve. When a challenging situation presents itself, the brain will respond in the way that it is conditioned to do so.

This is synonymous with the fight or flight response, and it is one reason why training in martial arts is so beneficial – the mental resilience developed in the dojo is transferable to all aspects of life.

If you run away at the first sign of trouble, it becomes a learned habit ingrained within your brain. Do it enough times, and even simple problems can appear insurmountable.

Making mountains out of molehills.

You need to take a proactive stance and build a solid foundation – consistent habits either work for or against you, and the choice is yours to make.

Another Side

There is another side of the equation, however, and it is one I have stumbled into time and again. It may be the case that you have spread yourself too thin and taken on too much. If this resonates with you, then your project strategy may need to change.

I have a habit of trying to take on too many things at once, and sometimes end up making very little progress in the multitude of tasks that I have taken on or need to be accomplished. Prioritisation is an art form which has served me well when dealing with this type of scenario. Sometimes I have to accept my losses in one area to make gains elsewhere. Maybe you can do it all but how much time will it take? Perhaps delegation or shouldering the burden can make things more manageable as long as you do not become overly reliant on others.

Limitations

We can all relate to the feelings of lethargy and being too tired to do the work. Sometimes these feelings are legitimate, and other times, it is laziness. Understanding your flowstate will aid you in determining the nature of your exhaustion.

Conclusion

If there’s one thing that grinds my gears, it’s those who say they are going to do something and then fail to deliver. Putting my judgmental hat on, it subjectively reflects poorly on their character.

It says to me that such people talk the talk, but they don’t walk the walk. They give ‘lip service’ but don’t deliver the goods when needed. They are indecisive and change their minds frequently.

Finish what you start. Because if you don’t, then who will?
