Get Stretched – The Slump

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

For those who are unaware, I have a hip imbalance in my body. There is a little over a centimetre of difference in elevation between my left and right hip. By extension, without orthopaedic support, this causes me to walk with an ever so slight limp. Over the years, this gradually caused a strain in my lower back, to the point where I suffered chronic lower back pain for six months.

In the present day, I am practically pain-free, and I can manage myself with regular stretching and so on. One particular stretch I want to talk about today is known as The Slump, and I find it particularly helpful to stretch the tighter hip that I have.

The Slump

You are going to need a bench or chair for this one. Place one foot flat on the bench, turned outwards. The other foot should be planted on the ground, toes facing forward. Now, one vertebra at a time, you are going to coil forward and lower your back from the waist to try and touch the ground with your fingertips.

You should feel the stretch in the groin and hip area of the leg that is placed on the bench, as well as the hamstring of the straightened leg.

Alternatively, place one knee on the bench and bend the leg making contact with the floor.

Conclusion

I have one side where I can easily touch the floor with my hands and the other I can barely get my fingers to make contact. I intend to include the slump back into my regular stretching routine to try and restore balance back into my hips and overall body. If you have having problems with your hips, this is one exercise I recommend you try. Let me know how it goes for you in the comments below!
