Chronicles of the Overlord – VE Day 75th Anniversary

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of World War II coming to an end, my neighbours and I decided to have a street party! I also got up to a few other things over the weekend which you can read about in due course.

Street Party

We kicked off at 4 pm with tea, cake and scones. One of my neighbours baked some cupcakes which I ate on the following day, and it was delicious! I busted out my special occasions only teapot and brewed some black tea I acquired from Sri Lanka in 2016.

My neighbours cautioned that the tea should be out of date, but it tasted fine to me! If you don’t hear from me again though, you know why.

We had a nice long three-hour catch-up chat while a couple of the children were playing around with their skipping ropes and their toy scooters.

One of my neighbours mentioned that the nearby woodlands would make for a scenic route with my bike. I remember when I first moved over fifteen years ago, my family went for a walk through the woodlands a couple of times, but I hadn’t been back there since. They mentioned there was a pond called ‘Soggy Bottom’ that was the attraction of the woodlands.

Another neighbour inspected my front driveway and was impressed with the lack of weeds. I happened to pull them out the day before! He mentioned that I could use his power spray to get the rest of the driveway spotless, an offer which I would see to accept on the following day, but more on that later.

Bike Ride

I decided to take their recommendation, and so on the following day, I set out on my bike to explore the woodlands, which are just a few minutes away from where I live. I had forgotten how massive the area was and was astounded by the sheer volume of woodland that was hidden so close. I eagerly set off to scout the area.

I couldn’t find Soggy Bottom for ages, but this is because I covered the perimeter first before exploring the deepest sections. Eventually, the pond came into view, and while it wasn’t particularly amazing, I decided to take a few photos anyway.

According to my neighbours, people had been leaving random bits and pieces around for other children to find to keep them entertained during the lockdown. I couldn’t find much during my bike ride though I was lucky to discover the following.

For those of you who have played Kingdom Hearts III you will recognise the Mickey Mouse symbol as a Lucky Emblem. The game had a side quest which required you to find a hundred of these Lucky Emblems scattered throughout the worlds. So it was pretty cool that I was able to find one in the world in which I live!

Power Spray

After my ride, I met up with my neighbour, and we spent three hours of power spraying the front driveway. He warned me to wear old clothes as it would be a dirty job, and he wasn’t kidding. I ate dirt on more than one occasion!

There was something magically satisfying about blasting away trapped dirt and moss between the crevices of the brickwork.

By the end, my body was splattered with dirt, but most of the driveway had been taken care of. I will need to fill the cracks with soft sand to help prevent any new weeds from growing in the future.

Conclusion

I had an enjoyable weekend, catching up with neighbours, exploring a new area on my bike and cleaning the driveway. It was a productive use of my time, and I encourage you to continue finding ways to make the best use of your time during coronavirus
