Chronicles of the Overlord – Surviving Lockdown

Overview

Many weeks into lockdown and mixed reactions have taken place across the globe. Some people have obeyed the lockdown orders, while others have disregarded it. Every UK citizen received a letter from the Prime Minister a week or two ago urging citizens to remain indoors as much as possible, while the NHS regains its footing.

Now while I am not in full agreement with the government, I have complied with their wishes.

Disagreement does not necessarily correlate to disobedience.

Given that my life has changed since the lockdown has taken place, I have adapted to the times, to keep going strong. While I understand that extroverted individuals especially may be struggling during this time, I, as an introvert, wish to offer my insight on how you can survive lockdown.

7 Tactics to Survive Lockdown

  1. Exercise
  2. Eat Well
  3. Hobbies
  4. Volunteer
  5. Reconnect
  6. Solitude
  7. Spending
1. Exercise

I suspect many have put on a few extra kilos since the lockdown was instigated, which is unfortunate as there is undoubtedly an opportunity to exercise during this period. There are many home workout programs that you can do without the use of gym equipment. I urge you all to spend time exercising during this time so that you can emerge out of this lockdown stronger than ever.

2. Eat Well

Stuck inside all day, the temptation to binge eat on junk food can be overwhelming. Prevention is the best defence, so avoid shopping for the garbage in the first place and, instead, pursue a variety of healthier options.

3. Hobbies

Now is a great time to take up a new hobby or work on any existing hobbies which are unaffected by the adverse situation we find ourselves currently. I am spending more time practising the piano. The latest performance, Life Will Change is below.

It’s Showtime!

I know this period is tough for many people, so I wanted to do this performance to inspire those who are struggling right now that life will change! It will take time, but this situation will improve, so hang tight and keep on fighting!

I have also taken to the task to tidy up my garden, a project that has admittedly been long overdue. Progress pictures below.

If you do not have a suitable hobby, there are plenty of options you can choose to take up during this time, if you are willing to explore the possibilities.

4. Volunteer

There are a lot of people out there who need help right now, so if you have ample time on your hands, consider lending a hand and supporting your community. Whether it be food shopping for the vulnerable or assisting key workers in some way, I am sure there is something you could be doing to support others during this period.

5. Reconnect

As the world slows down, there is an opportunity to reconnect with people. Old friends, you haven’t spoken with for a long time, perhaps or previous work colleagues. Just be mindful of the people you try to invite back into your life during this time.

6. Solitude

Conversely, now is the best time to go deep inside to seek solace within. I do not think there is a greater opportunity to spend time alone than now. There is a silent, underrated power in adapting solitude practices, and I encourage you to explore the possibilities that lie within yourself, rather than seeking external validation during this time of introspection.

7. Spending

In times of boredom, people revert to addiction. Food cravings are one as mentioned above, but impulse buying is another to watch out for and guard against. I admit I have been tempted to buy things during this period, the new Final Fantasy remake comes to mind, but I will withhold and behave myself for the time being. If you have excess money, consider saving or investing it instead of purchasing things you do not need, as many of us are guilty of doing.

Conclusion

The first step to counter bad habits is to have the awareness that they exist. Succumbing to addiction leaves you at the mercy of something outside of yourself.

Lasting happiness can only be attained through constructive effort toward a meaningful end.

Whenever you feel yourself slipping into addiction, consciously ask yourself if what you are doing is in your personal best interest. That will usually steer you back on track.

Stay strong, and you will transcend yourself through this lockdown.
