Best Eats – Avocados

Commencing operation . . .

The mighty avocado is somewhat unorthodox. Unlike most fruit which is packed with carbohydrates, the avocado instead goes against the grain and is instead substantial in monounsaturated fats which are the good kind mind you. What exactly is an avocado though? It is a green, pear-shaped stone fruit that grows on avocado trees. The inside of the fruit should be a yellow/green colour, and the texture is similar to that of butter. Once ripe, the outside skin turns to a brown colour. It does look a little bit like a grenade, a testament to the badassery of this boss fruit.

They are nutrient rich and the fats aid in satiation, which means you will feel full for longer if you have one. Because of this, they are a perfect way to avoid crunching down on carbs during sneaky snacking sessions, which I am sure we are all guilty of to some degree or other. Also, they are a source of omega 3, which is an essential nutrient for the body as it cannot be produced on its own. I used to get my source of omega 3 from fish, but after switching to a purely vegetarian diet, the avocado has stepped up to the plate to fulfill that requirement and many others too. All of these traits make the avocado a winner in my book and a good friend to have in my stomach.

To make sure avocados are ripe enough to consume, press into the skin. If it is rock solid, then it is too ripe. If you cut open an avocado and see it browning or notice dark blotches, this is a sign that the fruit is spoiling so avoid eating those areas or throw it out entirely. To speed up the process of ripening an avocado, you can place it in a paper bag, near a banana or wrap it in tin foil and heat it in the oven.

I like to have my avocado chopped in a salad, but there are other ways to consume this fruit. It works well on toast or crackers or with some salt or honey. My absolute favourite, however, has to be the avocado smoothie, a delicious drink I was treated to several times while visiting Sri Lanka back in 2016. There are plenty of options out there to consume this lush fruit, so find what works best for you.
