Power Up – Finger Pull-Ups

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

Do you want insane grip strength? Look no further than fingertip pull-ups; my go-to exercise to strengthen my fingers and gripping ability.

Technique

Before describing the execution of the fingertip pull-ups, I will run through the fundamentals for the basic pull up as there is no point in attempting fingertip pull-ups unless the basic version is first mastered. You will want to do these on a pull-up bar of some nature (the linked product is the one I use at home, but there are many different types of pull up bars you can acquire). All you have to do is grip the bar with both hands and pull yourself upwards.

Simple right?

The pull up primarily works your upper back muscles so if they are not up to par, you may struggle with these. If you practice them consistently, however, you will rapidly progress. Once you are comfortable with the basic version, you can branch out to many pull up variations including the wide grip, reverse grip and of course the fingertip variant, among others.

Fingertip pull-ups are particularly dangerous because the exercise is not primarily designed to increase muscle strength – it instead aims to build the strength in the tendons and ligaments within the fingers. This takes a lot longer to develop than muscles. So take it slow and gradually build up. You can use a door frame or staircase ledge to do these on, which is what I use. Alternatively, you can purchase something like this to practice on. The principle is exactly the same as the regular pull up, but now you must rely on your finger strength to haul your body up and down. If you manage to get really good at these you can even reduce the number of fingers you use to lift yourself or spread your fingers wider apart; either of these will place additional strain on individual fingers.

Conclusion

Having strong fingers is essential for me as a Martial Artist and Pianist. My fingers need to be both strong and flexible when making music or grappling. Rock climbers will also hugely benefit from this exercise, and actually, most people will, as our hands are almost in constant use.
