Mastermind – Reading

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

By which I mean what you are doing right now as opposed to predicting a situation. Both are useful skills; however, I will be covering the former in this instance.

Reading is a habit that I gained from an early age. Mostly fiction but a fair few non-fiction also. It was one of my most significant past times growing up, and most of the time nowadays, I will usually have a book that I am progressing through. Some have a preference for reading fictional works or factual books. I lean towards fiction myself, but it is essential to understand both as each develops you differently.

Fiction

Fuel for the imagination.

I doubt I would be anywhere near as creative as I am today if it wasn’t for all of the fictional works I had processed as a child. Fictional books are my friends – they have allowed my mind to travel through space and time across many realms. I became fully immersed in these worlds, imagining myself as an additional character that would silently move with the main characters.

These books were a healthy escape from a sometimes unpleasant reality during my early years. There was a time where I would spend my lunch break at school reading because I had no friends. Books accompanied me through what would otherwise have been lonelier days.

A chapter or two of fictional reading can help you fall asleep quicker at night, so if you have insomnia, try picking up a tome to read through.

Non-fiction

Great sources of information.

I am beginning to think that I have learned more over the years through reading and application of concepts rather than listening to others. The only ways to improve your knowledge on any particular subject are to learn from someone knowledgeable in that specific field, whether that is face to face (often not feasible) or via another source such as a book or video.

Books were the original recorded method of preserving and passing on knowledge beyond the span of a human lifetime. Today they are just as valid a source of information as the newer methods such as visual and audio recordings. Books have stood the test of time, and their validity in the world will likely never vanish.

If you are even able to pick up one or two useful concepts from a book, then it was worth the read.

Conclusion

Read fictional books to increase imagination and creativity. Read non-fiction to build on knowledge and concepts. If you are unsure which books to pick up, you can look for popular books online, ask other people what they would recommend, check out my books or consider my approved reading list here

Reading is great. It is fantastic, and I invite you all to take up the mantle and find a book to read through. Once you form a habit, try and aim to always have a book on the go!
