Best Eats – Greek Yogurt

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

I suffer from a mild form of lactose intolerance. Usually, the worst-case scenario is that I get quite gassy if I have too many dairy products. So I try to avoid standalone dairy products like blocks of cheese and raw milk. The only dairy product that I have regularly is yogurt. Greek yogurt with 0% fat content to be more specific, but even versions with fat content are perfectly fine with a balanced diet. My body doesn’t tend to complain when I eat this yogurt, so I take that as a free pass to add a little bit of dairy into my life. You see, with Greek Yogurt, there is an additional step within the process which removes most of the lactose. Below I list three main benefits to regular consumption of Greek yogurt.

Great source of Protein

A typical serving of Greek yogurt can contain between 10-20 grams of protein. As a vegetarian, this, therefore, becomes a primary source of protein, and it does make a decent alternative to eating heavy meats.

Low in Carbohydrates

Due to the processing of Greek Yogurt, it contains substantially fewer carbohydrates in comparison to regular yogurt, primarily attributed to the difference in lactose content between the two. This also makes Greek yogurt more manageable to digest in comparison to regular yogurts. For those who suffer from lactose intolerance, diabetes, or simply want to stay away from carbs, Greek yogurt makes for a solid choice.

Increase live cultures in your body

Some studies show an increase in allergy resistance within people who regularly consume yogurt. The basis is that the live cultures (good bacteria) within the yogurt boost allergy resilience within the body because they do not want to be ejected out of the body via coughing or sneezing. These bacteria live inside your gut, and they also aid in digestion and can even increase mental health. There is a relationship between the stomach and the brain, so promoting a healthy gut, in turn, assists with mental well being.

My recommendation

Fage is my go-to brand for my yogurt. With a slogan that states that they won’t create a product that they wouldn’t feed to their children, I know that good, healthy, and clean eating is high on their priorities. I have tried both their 0% fat, and 5% fat yogurts and each are solid. My preference leans towards the fat-free variant due to the higher concentration of protein, but honestly, you can get by just fine with either choice.

Conclusion

Give it a try, especially for those of you who suffer from lactose intolerance. Greek Yogurt is very versatile; there is a lot you can do with it. You can eat it standalone, or add some berries or honey to the pot. It can be included in soups to give that thick and creamy texture or provided on the side with a hot curry to help with managing the spiciness!
