Overview

Bananas are one of the most popular fruits worldwide and the most popular in the UK. From a young age, I have been a big fan of bananas. I used to have one in my school lunch box each day, and one of my favourite meals was having a banana with one or two bread slices.

In more recent years I would chop one with my morning porridge, and the latest use I have found for these tasty fruits is blending them as part of my avocado smoothie recipe.

Bananas hold a lot of good value for our body as you will learn below.

12 Banana Benefits

  • Highly Nutritious
  • Manages Diabetes
  • Improves Digestion
  • Heart Health
  • Kidney Health
  • Reduces Stress
  • Enhances Vision
  • Performance Booster
  • Bone Health
  • Improves Sleep
  • Cancer Killing
  • Body Detox
1. Highly Nutritious

Bananas grant an excellent supply of potassium, calcium, manganese, magnesium, iron, as well as vitamins B6 and C.

2. Manages Diabetes

Bananas contain a specific fibre called pectin and resistant starch. These reduce how quickly the body can breakdown food, and therefore sugar is released into the body slowly, preventing sugar or insulin spikes.

3. Improves Digestion

Fibre also helps improve digestion and bananas contain roughly ten percent of the recommended amount of fibre that should be consumed daily. Resistant starch in bananas also helps promote overall gut health, by feeding healthy bacteria which in turn can support digestive functions more effectively.

4. Heart Health

A medium-sized banana contains around ten percent of the recommended amount of potassium that should be consumed daily. Potassium helps keep the heart beating by improving electrical impulses throughout the body. Bananas also contain magnesium which can also support heart health.

5. Kidney Health

Potassium also plays a role in maintaining healthy kidneys and can help reduce the chances of kidney disease.

6. Reduces Stress

Bananas contain tryptophan which the body converts into the mood relaxing serotonin. They also contain vitamin B9, which has anti-depressant properties, by improving the effectiveness that serotonin enters the brain. Magnesium can also help muscles relax, which can reduce tension in the body.

7. Enhances Vision

Bananas themselves do not contain much vitamin A. Still, they do contain specific compounds which the body converts into vitamin A! Vitamin A supports vision health by preserving the membranes surrounding the eyes and can prevent macular degeneration.

8. Performance Booster

Bananas are a fantastic food source for replenishing energy and restoring electrolytes to the body, which can prevent muscle soreness and cramps after training.

9. Bone Health

Bananas contain a small amount of calcium, but they also contain non-digestive carbohydrates which facilitate the absorption of calcium into the body.

10. Improves Sleep

Tryptophan is also known for inducing sleep. For those who struggle to get to bed, consider eating a banana a couple of hours beforehand.

11. Cancer Killing

Bananas contain various antioxidants in the form of carotenoids which prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals and can prevent cell mutations from occurring, which could otherwise lead to cancer.

12. Body Detox

Pectin also acts as a natural detoxing agent by binding to toxic substances which then leave the body through secretion.

Conclusion

Bananas put in a lot of work, and they are quite versatile when it comes to food preparation. Eat them raw, chop them up, add them to desserts, and so on. They can even boost overall mood so turn that frown upside down by eating a banana!
