Best Eats – Get Figy with it!

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

Figs have recently become my go-to sweet fruit, over dates. I usually go through rotations between the two in fairness, but at the moment, I am in the phase of getting Figy with it! Now there are two main variants of figs – raw and dried. I have tried both, but I typically consume dried figs better, so this is what I will be focusing on for this article.

Figs are the fruit produced from a ficus tree, a member of the Mulberry family, and are considered one of the oldest trees in existence, dating back to the earliest of historical documents. They were held in such high esteem that the ancient Greeks forbid the export of this lush fruit.

Benefits

Consider the following five benefits to fig consumption.

  1. Helps Manage Weight
  2. Aids in Diabetes Prevention
  3. Lowers Blood Pressure
  4. Boosts Cardiovascular Function
  5. Promotes Bone Health
1. Helps Manage Weight

Figs are rather satiating. I consume a few after my final meal of the day, and that helps tick me over to the next day. The fibre content is likely responsible for the satiating effect that figs can have on the body.

2. Aids in Diabetes Prevention

Figs provide a great source of potassium that the body uses to regulate blood sugar levels and hence reduces the amount of sugar that is absorbed after each meal.

3. Lowers Blood Pressure

Potassium also helps to counteract sodium levels in the body, which are often too high due to the number of products that add salt as a preservative. Too much sodium in the body can lead to an increase in blood pressure.

4. Boosts Cardiovascular Function

Figs are stacked with anti-oxidants, and they are also known to reduce the level of triglycerides (fat particles which interfere with heart function) in the body. Dried figs especially are renowned for having a higher amount of anti-oxidants in comparison to their raw counterparts.

5. Promotes Bone Health

Figs are a good source of magnesium and calcium, both of which help keep your bones strong and healthy. Because the human body cannot naturally produce calcium, it can prove challenging to intake enough of it. Many people struggle to do so, despite drinking cow’s milk, so it is essential to have other sources which can provide you with calcium.

Conclusion

If you have never eaten a fig before, you are missing out! They are a great, healthy alternative to chocolate and other sweets, just like dates. Please give them a go and get Figy with it!
