Overview
There are many kinds of people in this world. On one end, you have talented individuals who seem to be able to do everything. The other end is less pretty. The lacklustre, which are mediocre at most everything they attempt.
That used to be me.
My Experience
The only thing I would say that I was ‘blessed’ with in terms of natural ability would be my flexibility. I was always quite nimble. Everything else I had to work hard for, however. You can read more about the climb on my About section.
Anyway, as mentioned in my previous entry, I started Absolute Ascendancy to share my wealth of knowledge and experiences gained through my varied lifestyle.
I will say that while I have a range of skills that I have developed over many years, the degree of focus and time that I dedicate to each craft varies.
To the point where you could likely say that I spend a lot of time honing my martial arts, yet diversify my skillset with the piano and gaming.
Some people spend the majority of their time honing one craft, while others diversify their skill-set.
The King of one thing or a jack of all trades?
Now I won’t advocate prioritising one approach over the other, but I will say that developing a multitude of skills is a worthwhile pursuit in self-development.
Why Diversify
There are three main reasons why diversifying your skill-set is a good idea.
- Broadens Horizons
- Adaptable to Change
- Develops the Brain
Broadens Horizons
Learning and developing a variety of skills will open doors for you and take you to places you may have never thought possible. In many cases you won’t know where honing a specific craft will end up taking you, but if you do not develop the skill in the first instance, you will not allow such potentialities to present themselves to you in the first instance.
- Learning a new language allows you to integrate yourself around the world better.
- Learning DIY equips you with the ability to take on a home improvement project.
- Learning a musical instrument could land you a gig.
Adaptable to Change
Ultimately life never stays the same and actually is in constant change. Equipping yourself with a broad, diverse range of skills better allows you to handle circumstantial changes that inadvertently come your way.
The coronavirus is a recent viable example. People and businesses with a diverse range of skills are better able to adapt to the pandemic to not only survive these trying times but in some cases, even thrive.
A one trick-pony gets old real quick, especially in this day and age where everything is so fast-paced.
Develops the Brain
People like to categorise themselves, and I am no exception. The issue with this, however, is that it can lead individuals to focus only on skills which they perceive to be in line with their ‘image’ so to speak.
Mathematicians and science types, stick to learning programming and other logical based skills. More creative types tend to focus on languages, music, and the arts.
The problem with the above which I have discovered through my own life experience is that an overemphasis is placed on one hemisphere of the brain, which subsequently leads to an underdeveloped opposite hemisphere.
I started as a jack of no trades. Throughout the years, I slowly focused myself on mathematics, to the point where my creativity took a back seat. Nowadays, I make a conscious effort to work my entire brain, as I believe this to be the way to maximise human potential.
Ingenuity is a blend of logic and creativity.
Conclusion
So here’s a challenge for you. If you perceive yourself to be a science type individual, consider picking up a musical instrument or learning a new language. A skill which is creative. Conversely, for the artists and creatives of the world, try learning a logic-based skill, like a programming language or mastering chess!
Diversify your skill-set to better survive and thrive!
