Commencing operation . . .

Overview

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending Geek Retreat Addlestone’s official store opening!

Saturday

I dressed up in my Overlord Cosplay again for this event. The store was packed full of action when I arrived, which was great to see.

I grabbed my free milkshake for being in cosplay and then went over to where Winston Harris from Syeknom Games was showing off his game, Battle for the Island.

Battle for the Island

It’s always cool to meet another board game developer and I was keen to get stuck into a game of Battle for the Island. Winston explained the rules succinctly in around ten or so minutes, and then me and my friend were straight into playing. While most of the rules are simplistic and easy to learn, I very quickly realised that this game had some seriously in depth strategy to it, very much akin to chess in that regard, but with a chance element included.

I could not find a single flaw in the gameplay mechanics. There was a rule about crossfire that thematically did not make sense to me, but I understood why the rule worked the way it did from a game play perspective. It is true that some of the artwork and graphics could be improved upon to bolster the look and feel of the experience, but I would much rather play a game with solid mechanics and basic art rather than play a game that graphically looks amazing but the gameplay is poor.

I was hooked from the get go. I had been looking for a highly strategic two player board game that lasts about an hour (20-60 mins) and I found it in Battle for the Island. I lost the first game but got my revenge in the rematch and shortly afterwards, purchased my copy.

If you want to learn more about the game and/or purchase a copy, please visit Sykenom Games.

We took a breather and then played through a couple of other board games courtesy of the extensive board game library that the store has on offer for people to play FOR FREE. I was humbled to learn that the majority of the board game collection belonged to Mark, one of the store owners who generously decided to lend his vast assortment of games to the public to play FOR FREE.

Sunday

A quieter day than the Saturday but that was what I needed anyway. I took the opportunity to try the classic arcade and geeez the games on there were a lot harder than I remembered as a child! I was brutally humbled while attempting to play through old school classics like pac-man, centipede, and space invaders.

I then had the pleasure of introducing a couple of new people to the wonderful world of board games. We ended up playing Splendor as a nice gateway game, followed by Ticket to Ride London edition.

Conclusion

An incredibly fun weekend was had. I wish Geek Retreat Addlestone every success and same with Syeknom Games.

Overview

It has been a little longer than usual since my last post, as I am making a shift toward youtube videos for the foreseeable future. I still plan to use the blog to update every now and again but will likely be far less frequent than before.

Anyway, I had the pleasant opportunity of attending the Guildford Games Festival earlier this month and it was a blast!

Guildford Games Festival

I attended a couple of interesting talks during my day and had the opportunity to check out some really cool games. I played one called Bullion which serves as a lighter party game whereby pirates are scrambling to get treasure. The player with the most treasure wins however if all pirates are KO’d then all the players lose! Enemies will attack players and there’s a delicate balance between being greedy and helping the team out.

I was impressed with the multiple game modes on offer. A boss battle mode introduces a boss that players need to work together to defeat less a party wipe grants an instant game over! There was also a campaign type mode for players who want to carry on their contests over several rounds.

If you like games like Mario Party and Super Smash, give this one a look.

I also played a physical card game called Traders of the Silk Road which seemed decent and robust in mechanics. I was glad to see at least one physical game at a convention aimed toward video games. Gives me opportunities in the future to maybe demo Black Metro there someday.

I wore my Overlord persona cosplay outfit so spent some time with ACM Games Academy at their cosplay draw booth, whereby their artists drew me while I did a couple of strenuous poses (at my discretion). I was paired up with a shark cosplayer and while my helmet is meant to be a dragon helmet, it can be a shark helmet this time round, so we’re a pair of sharks.

My complaints with the festival was that it shut down at 4pm rather than 5pm as advertised, and the rooms were too small for the talks (but this was due to unexpected turnout, more than anything else). Otherwise, I had a brilliant time. Kudos to the numerous water stations scattered throughout the venue – great idea!

I met up with one of my friends and his group after the convention ended and spent a few hours at the pub with other gamers, socialising and intermixing as it were. Made a couple of promising connections during that time which will hopefully aid me in furthering the Black Metro project.

Board Game Geek Article

In other news, I had the opportunity of hosting a fairly popular writer at board game geek to run through a playtest of Black Metro, the results of which were positive. Nick kindly took the opportunity to write a promotional article which you can read here.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed this article. Do be sure to check out my youtube for continued videos relating to Black Metro, as that is going to be my focus going forward for the foreseeable future.

Gaming Zone – Black Metro Digital Release!

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

It is time! I am proud to announce the digital release of Black Metro the board game! Consider it a gift for the New Year. If you haven’t already read my previous post, consider doing so, as this is a follow-up.

Digital Release

After some consideration, I have decided to release the game on both Tabletop Playground (TTPG) and Tabletop Simulator (TTS), as I understand most people have TTS and are happy enough with it, and therefore may not want to purchase TTPG.

The TTS mod is an old prototype I was using for my earlier playtesting throughout the pandemic. I have updated the image files but otherwise I do not plan on maintaining the mod, as my focus will be on updating and improving the TTPG mod. The TTS mod is functional and playable but lacks the sleekness and finesse of the TTPG mod. It is however free to play, so give the game a go on there if nothing else.

The TTPG mod is also currently free, however mod.io is planning on allowing monetisation for indie game developers to try and earn some money from their games. They have said that this functionality should be available somewhere in the first half of 2023. When that time comes, I am planning on releasing a new version of the mod which will be monetised and continue to receive updates, while the existing TTPG mod at that time will still exist for free, but will no longer receive updates.

The journey so far . . .

I started this project 30 months ago, in the summer of 2020. It began with a board game that after the first playtest required an overhaul of over half the mechanics! Around 6 months into the game development, I had a tonne of lore behind the universe and setting of the game. I had originally planned to weave the lore into the rulebook, but soon realised I would end up with several hundred pages worth of storytelling in the rulebook!

I decided that the best course of action would be to create a separate novella that details the Black Metro universe, the main cast of characters, and the storyline that leads to the Black Metro tournament; the setting of the board game.

For those of you who want to learn more behind the universe of the game, that option is available, but it is not necessary to enjoy the board game. For those who want to use their imagination and create their own story behind the conflicts surrounding the dark city, that option also exists and is one of the benefits of separating the story from the board game, albeit there is a fair amount of lore still scattered throughout the rulebook, just not hundreds of pages worth!

Anyway for the next year or so, I bounced between developing the game and writing the novella, to keep my mind fresh and prevent boredom and monotony from creeping in. In spring 2022, I made my debut at the UK Games Expo which was one heck of an experience to take the lead in promoting Black Metro.

I also entered a couple of online board game competitions but did not do well at all in either of them; I’m talking near literal bottom of the barrel levels of bad. I think the main issue comes down to my lack of ability in conveying my pitch to a digital audience, as I have had little problems with selling the game to people face to face. Judging from overall feedback, the game isn’t ‘bad’, so it’s not as though I’ve designed a poor game, just need to convey things better; a task which I can work on in the future.

The remaining half year or so was spent on finalising the mechanics and presentation of the game, and then completing the rulebook and digital mods, which was incredibly intensive. The past few months have especially been exhaustive: that last 20 percent takes just as long as the first 80, but I made it to the end; crossed the finish line!

What’s next?

The plan is to start promoting the hell out of the digital release. I am hoping to release tonnes of content (likely videos) on strategies surrounding Black Metro, as there is a lot going on in the game. Just to give you a potential idea of the type of content to expect:

  • Intro videos to learn the game
  • Overall gameplay strategies
  • Candidate + technology strategy guides

I will probably open this up to the users in my discord server to voice their opinions on what they would like to see as well.

On top of this informational and promotional content, there is still a lot of cool stuff I want to implement into the TTPG mod, so hopefully with the connections I have; I will aim to continue to upgrade the features of the mod to improve the overall experience for you guys. And I am sure there will be bug fixes that crop up which will need to be addressed as and when they arise.

Conclusion

My resolution for this year was to become more socially active; a goal I believe I have achieved with my various ventures. I’ve attended numerous expos this year, visited various game clubs, and befriended a fair amount of people through these experiences.

My goal for 2023 is to improve my digital communication skills; specifically with promoting the Black Metro digital release. Give the game a go and if you have any feedback, you can comment on my discord server or shoot me a message. Happy new year and bring on 2023!

Overview

The end of year is fast approaching and I am frantically at work trying to finalise the development of Black Metro. During the past couple of months I have had some questions thrown my way regarding the inspiration process behind Black Metro and why I decided to undertake this project. I figured as the penultimate article for this year, I would try to address some of these questions, and I might carry some over to the end of year also. Anyway, let’s get cracking.

Why ‘Black Metro’?

I have some fond memories of roaming the cities of Melbourne and London at night. The dazzling glow of a city in the evening makes for an alluring scene of beauty. I used to play a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh! back in the day and the most powerful card in my deck was Future Fusion.

I had an ultimate rare version of the card so it was basically a dark city in the future which is effectively what Black Metro is. I wish I had kept my copy, it’s worth £40-£50 now. More recently, Final Fantasy VII remake sparked a lot of inspiration behind the overall design of Black Metro. Specifically district 01 the Shadowforge Factory, but also district 11 the Astral Tower.

Black Metro can also be considered an alternate version of neo Gotham City from Batman Beyond. The Dark Knight is one of my favourite heroes and loved watching the show as a kid.

Finally for those familiar with Pokemon Black and White, you can enter a place called Black City which is a dark themed city set in the future.

Why worker placement / area control hybrid?

Black Metro takes its inspiration from a variety of board games I enjoy playing, the most influential of those likely being Lords of Waterdeep. Worker placement is probably my favourite board game mechanic and area control is my favourite game concept. In other words, Black Metro is a game where you utilise worker placement mechanics as a means toward establishing area control. Conceptually, this is very similar to Blood Rage; another game I enjoy playing.

Basically, I decided to combine my favourite aspects of board games and created Black Metro as a result.

What I personally found lacking in other worker placement games is the inability to directly attack other player’s workers on the game board, barring a few exceptions like playing specific cards or whatnot. Also the one-dimensional aspect of utilising workers to get ‘stuff’ can lose its potency toward the final round or so when acquisition and conversion of ‘stuff’ can potentially yield lesser returns (due to the imminent end of the game).

Black Metro solves these problems by assigning a strength value to all personnel (workers) and including an overwhelm mechanic. Dominating a specific district (location) with a certain amount of strength can overwhelm other player’s personnel and force them to ‘run away’ from that district; losing them the ability to use that district’s abilities for the round.

What typically ends up happening in a game of Black Metro is that the early rounds sees players spreading their personnel far and wide to utilise as many district’s abilities as possible. In later rounds, players need to start considering assigning more personnel (and therefore strength) to districts and bunching up their forces to increase resiliency against other player’s personnel; thereby utilising less districts overall but increasing the chances of being able to use the districts where they have bunched up their personnel.

In this manner, as the game progresses, strength becomes increasingly important and the utilisation of districts diminishes, in a fairly organic manner. Which means that in the end game once players have built up their strength and resources etc, players don’t feel like they are ‘wasting’ actions assigning personnel to districts to get ‘stuff’ they don’t need. Instead, they can focus on battling other players to acquire more power (victory points) while simultaneously denying their competition those potential points. Or at the very least, players have the option available to them to prioritise attacking other players with their personnel rather than utilising districts.

There are many board games which utilise an area control and resource acquisition dynamic, but the majority of these do not use worker placement as the means to get units onto the game board. They will use a dice system or some other kind of movement system to determine how many units can move from A to B and so on. Throughout my gaming experiences, I noticed that there was an underdeveloped area for worker placement games utilising combat mechanics and area control dynamics.

It is my hope that Black Metro breaks some new ground in this underutilised area of gaming and brings something fresh to the table for all to enjoy.

Conclusion

I think that will do for now. I’ll have a couple more questions answered in next month’s article so stay tuned until then!

Overview

This year, I decided to do something a little extra for Halloween by hosting a special Halloween party at The Dojo Woking.

Halloween Party

It took a fair bit of setting up but thanks to the help of a few dojo mates, we managed to transform the dojo into something truly nightmarish! Skeletons, pumpkins, tissue ghosts, and skull mugs decorated the dojo. Chess, gargoyles tic-tac-toe, and playing cards lined up the games with Final Fantasy VII soundtrack backing for the music.

Black Metro – The Successor UK Release

I am now accepting orders from UK residents for my novella, Black Metro – The Successor!

To celebrate this milestone and in the spirit of Halloween, I have prepared a short piano piece.

Conclusion

I hope your Halloween was as spooky inspired as mine was!

Overview

It’s been a while since I’ve posted something on here. Apologies for that, but I have been busy at work on the Black Metro project. Last Friday I had the opportunity to attend EGX London, which I believe is the biggest video gaming expo in the UK.

EGX London

I meet up with my friends at London Waterloo and we then travel together from there to the Excel centre where EGX is being hosted. One of my friends is in the very early stages of developing a board game of his own so it was nice to share my insights with him, regarding the development process and some of the things I have picked up throughout this two year project.

Unlike the previous expos I went to, this one was all about relaxation and checking out new games. I wasn’t tied down to a stand, but rather free as a bird to do as I wished. We played through a variety of video games on several consoles and also attended a couple of video game talks throughout the day which were of interest.

I had the opportunity to try a steam deck which was an okay experience. The handheld was too big and clunky for my personal tastes, though I am a guy who grew up with the original Gameboy through to 3DS, the latter of which I think is pushing the boundaries on console size. Still though, the graphics were solid, the sound was good and the gameplay was fluid.

There was also a dedicated area for board games which was a lot of fun and we ended up spending a decent amount of our day there playing through games which were simple on the surface but which had a surprisingly deep level of strategy to them.

There were also a couple of schools which had sent their students to EGX for a field trip, which I thought was so awesome. I only wish I had those kinds of opportunities when I was a kid. It just goes to show how much more valued the computer sciences and STEM subjects are these days and how they can be applied to the games industry.

Conclusion

All in all, a nice day out and it was interesting to see the current position of the latest video games in development. It was also useful to have an opportunity to play on a steam deck to see what that was like.

Overview

My tireless pursuit to find the perfect lunch for me has led me to an unexpected place. I wanted to find a meal which I could cook in one go that would last me around a week. This allows for batch cooking, which is a pretty neat time saver. As an experimental whim, I decided to see whether I could make a giant sized, boss omelette, and the results surpassed my expectations!

Ingredients

  • A dozen eggs
  • 750g Frozen bag of mixed vegetables
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Chili flakes
  • Olive oil

Preparation time: 1 hour.

Serves: 6-8 portions.

Method

Fire up that oven and preheat it to 190 degrees on fan oven setting. Pour some olive oil into a giant sized wok that can fit in your oven, and then pour the contents of the frozen vegetables into the wok. I tend to find frozen carrot, peas, beans and sweetcorn mix works well here, but any small vegetables should be fine.

Crack those 12 eggs into a bowl, add salt and give the mixture a good whisk before pouring it into the wok. Add pepper and chilli flakes to your preferred liking and then place the wok in the oven for 45 minutes to an hour.

Once it has finished cooking, remove the wok from the oven and you’re done!

Notes

If you cut into the omelette during the day of cooking, egg juices will likely spill into and over any gaps created. This is perfectly normal. Once the omelette cools down and hardens, it will be fine to cut into slices without any spill over.

Conclusion

There are a few great things about this particular recipe. The manual preparation work is fairly minimal and the ingredients are quite cheap – under £5. That is some serious value town for the bulk of a main meal which lasts a week. I like to accompany my boss omelette with crisps and fruit to complete my meal. As for the omelette itself, the ingredients are highly adaptable. You can easily replace the vegetable mix with some sliced and diced meat options. I added tofu once which was tasty but made the omelette too bulky for my preference.

Give this recipe a try – you won’t be disappointed!

Chronicles of the Overlord – Exponential Expo Expeditions!

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

The past month has been incredibly busy for me. I attended not one but two UK Expo events. The first was the UK Martial Arts Show (UKMAS) and the second was the UK Games Expo (UKGE). This post will be a report detailing my experience throughout both of those shows.

UK Martial Arts Show

My Sensei has created a revolutionary new combat helmet for all styles of martial arts to use for training and/or competition fighting.

It was debuted at UKMAS and a team of five of us travelled to the Dome in Doncaster from Surrey.

It was an early start on Saturday morning, where I met two of the team for 6am at The Dojo Woking to set off on our 3.5 hour drive. The journey was smooth however, and we united with the rest of the crew at roughly 9:30.

Throughout the day, there were martial arts performances by various styles from Tae Kwon Do, to Karate, even weapon demos with swords and nunchuku, among others.

Opro were one of our neighbours and they kindly gifted each of us with one of their prestigious mouth guards.

We went to the pub for a meal on Saturday evening, and then hit the town to check out the night scene. Not the sort of thing I would ordinarily get too involved with, but once in a blue moon is okay for me. The area we roamed looked pretty dodgy in all honesty but that’s where having a martial arts background serves as a saving grace and confidence booster.

We hit up a few bars, the third of which was very good, barring the occasional strobe lighting and refusal to serve tap water. It was quite a small shack type place but it was nice and warm and the tunes were decent. Unfortunately, our night out ends rather abruptly when one of our crew gets alcohol poisoning, serving a grim reminder as to why I stay away from it.

We were allowed a lie in on Sunday so after taking a picture of the outside view from my room, we meet up at 10:15 for breakfast, then made our way back to the stand for the final day.

Our stand did a demonstration on both days, but whereas Saturday was more kickboxing based, Sunday was my time to shine. I performed Koshiki Kusanku kata and then demonstrated some karate / kickboxing strikes against the head guard. After the demo, still feeling fired up having not done any exercise on Saturday, I decided to drop into one of the karate seminars that were taking place throughout the day. It was a great session, starting off with pretty exhaustive stretching, followed by various martial arts bunkai (kata applications).

By the time the seminar finished, the day had pretty much concluded. We packed away, went our separate ways and ended up getting back home for around 8pm.

UK Games Expo

My objectives for the UK Game Expo were to generate book sales, raise awareness of the project and get people to demo the game. One of the friends who is supporting the project gets to mine for about midday on Thursday and we set off to the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Despite the Jubilee weekend approaching, our journey was smooth.

We checked in at the Hilton, and then start transporting the goods from our car to the venue. I unfortunately underestimated the distance and weight of the things to be transported, and it ended up being around four trips to get everything over. It was an exhaustive exercise and next time, I will be certain to procure a portable dolly or the like, to ease the burden.

The expo took place from Friday through to Sunday and during that time, I was busy drawing people in to conduct game demos which I also facilitated. My friends supported me in managing the store while I was conducting the demos and overall I was able to generate a tonne of interest in the game and project as a whole.

The game board itself is a master piece and drew the attention of many people throughout the expo. I only wish I had the game board image sooner so I could have added it to my promotional materials but alas, I can aim to do so for next time.

Sadly, I was unable to convert demos into book sales at this stage. Given that it is a games expo, people want to play games rather than read books. I am also a complete unknown entity so I didn’t have the momentum behind me on that front. I did however manage to sell one book to a couple, which marked the first book I have ever sold. So to Phill and Linda, I will never forget.

There were various events throughout each evening as well, such as publicity and networking events which were quite useful to generate some more media presence and meet like-minded individuals. I also joined in on a few drop in gaming sessions which were great fun.

We returned home on Monday which was fortunate as traffic on Sunday was apparently horrendous due to the conclusion of the Jubilee weekend. All in all, a very successful expo debut for Black Metro which should put me in good stead for the digital release of the board game end of year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the UK Games Expo team for hosting an incredible event, my neighbouring expo stalls particularly unfringed.co for being such great people, and of course all of my friends who have helped support the project for the past couple of years, especially those of you who assisted me throughout the expo weekend – I do not know how I would have managed without you.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed reading through my expo expeditions. Onwards and upwards!

Gaming Zone – Black Metro – The Successor Ch.3

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

This penultimate blog post series unveils the final chapter that I will be publicly releasing. It presents the first obstacle for our protagonist to navigate through.  Enjoy!

Chapter 3

Danielle rushed back frantically toward the Shadowforge Factory, hoping that no one was harmed. The front gate was unoccupied, so Danielle slipped into the complex without complication. She closed in on the area where the fire originated and evaluated the situation; the fire was not massive, but it was spreading fast into the area in front of the warehouse. Her eyes began to tear up. Smoke filled her nostrils and the burning sensation caused her to cough repeatedly as she wiped her eyes and covered her mouth. She noticed a fire extinguisher near the warehouse entrance. She struggled to lift it, but she aimed the device at the fire and cleared a path to the doors.

As Danielle approached, she heard a faint cry from within. She needed to hurry. The fire raged inside, and the enclosed space made it difficult to breathe. Danielle looked around to see if she could find some protective equipment, but instead she noticed a switchboard on the inner wall of the entrance point. Her eyes scanned the series of buttons. She pressed one which opened the warehouse roof and she watched as it split into partitions which receded completely. The resulting updraft lifted the suffocating smoke.

With visibility improved, she quickly located the safety equipment. Hastily, she covered her face with safety goggles and a mask, and donned a pair of durable gloves. Danielle resumed spraying the fire extinguisher and moved toward the source of the cry. It was not long before she spotted, through the dusty visor of her goggles, the person to be saved. Some debris pinned him down and he was surrounded by flames, which were closing in by the second.

Danielle managed to eliminate the surrounding flames with the extinguisher. She discarded it and crouched over the wounded man.

“Everything’s going to be okay!” Danielle said reassuringly, while working to remove the debris. “Hang on and I will free you in just a sec!”

The man gave a slight nod. Working together, the pair managed to shift the debris to one side and, after he examined his body slowly, the man was able to stand. He wore thick gloves, a mask and visor, and his uniform, although ragged, outlined a solid, muscular frame.

“Thanks, I thought I was done for!”

“We’re not through the fire and flames just yet.”

“Speaking of which …” He hesitated before continuing, “You’re going to think I’m insane, but there is something I must retrieve before I leave. It’s just a little further in.”

“You must be joking! You almost died a few minutes ago!”

“We don’t have the luxury of time to be arguing. You with me or not?”

“I cannot believe I’m agreeing to this …” Danielle muttered, more to herself than the recently rescued.

Danielle followed as the man grabbed the extinguisher and moved deeper into the warehouse. The fire engulfed most of the factory. The flames were blinding and the smoke choked the pair, like invisible hands squeezing slowly around their throats. Even with the protective equipment and the ventilation from the opened roof, it was difficult to get a decent lungful of air.

The man was determined, however, and continued to spray open a path relentlessly until the pair reached a work station.

“There it is,” remarked the worker as he made his way to a worktop surface and grabbed a metallic case with his free, gloved hand before turning to Danielle.

“Take the extinguisher and let’s get out of here, before we’re cooked alive!” he said.

“This had better be worth it!” Danielle chided, as she took the extinguisher from him and slowly made her way to the entrance with the man following close behind.

A nearby fiery explosion caused the pair to collapse to their knees. The fire extinguisher slipped from Danielle’s hands and tumbled into nearby flames.

“Oh no!”

“Back on your feet, hurry!” the man urged. “Forget the extinguisher and run for your life!”

She did not need telling twice. The pair bolted as fast as they could toward the exit. More explosions caused them to stumble a few more times, but the exit was in clear view. They were mere moments from escaping, but the force from another explosion lifted Danielle and flung her against the perimeter wall. Her body slammed hard against the metal surface and she collapsed onto the floor. The last thing she saw before she blacked out was the man crouched over her. She thought he shouted something, in desperation, but before she could process the thought she embraced sweet oblivion.

Conclusion

Stay tuned for next month when I detail how my UK Games Expo debut went!
