Chronicles of the Overlord – Guildford Games Festival

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

It has been a little longer than usual since my last post, as I am making a shift toward youtube videos for the foreseeable future. I still plan to use the blog to update every now and again but will likely be far less frequent than before.

Anyway, I had the pleasant opportunity of attending the Guildford Games Festival earlier this month and it was a blast!

Guildford Games Festival

I attended a couple of interesting talks during my day and had the opportunity to check out some really cool games. I played one called Bullion which serves as a lighter party game whereby pirates are scrambling to get treasure. The player with the most treasure wins however if all pirates are KO’d then all the players lose! Enemies will attack players and there’s a delicate balance between being greedy and helping the team out.

I was impressed with the multiple game modes on offer. A boss battle mode introduces a boss that players need to work together to defeat less a party wipe grants an instant game over! There was also a campaign type mode for players who want to carry on their contests over several rounds.

If you like games like Mario Party and Super Smash, give this one a look.

I also played a physical card game called Traders of the Silk Road which seemed decent and robust in mechanics. I was glad to see at least one physical game at a convention aimed toward video games. Gives me opportunities in the future to maybe demo Black Metro there someday.

I wore my Overlord persona cosplay outfit so spent some time with ACM Games Academy at their cosplay draw booth, whereby their artists drew me while I did a couple of strenuous poses (at my discretion). I was paired up with a shark cosplayer and while my helmet is meant to be a dragon helmet, it can be a shark helmet this time round, so we’re a pair of sharks.

My complaints with the festival was that it shut down at 4pm rather than 5pm as advertised, and the rooms were too small for the talks (but this was due to unexpected turnout, more than anything else). Otherwise, I had a brilliant time. Kudos to the numerous water stations scattered throughout the venue – great idea!

I met up with one of my friends and his group after the convention ended and spent a few hours at the pub with other gamers, socialising and intermixing as it were. Made a couple of promising connections during that time which will hopefully aid me in furthering the Black Metro project.

Board Game Geek Article

In other news, I had the opportunity of hosting a fairly popular writer at board game geek to run through a playtest of Black Metro, the results of which were positive. Nick kindly took the opportunity to write a promotional article which you can read here.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed this article. Do be sure to check out my youtube for continued videos relating to Black Metro, as that is going to be my focus going forward for the foreseeable future.

Mission complete – Overlord Drakow signing out.
