Chronicles of the Overlord – EGX London

Commencing operation . . .

Overview

It’s been a while since I’ve posted something on here. Apologies for that, but I have been busy at work on the Black Metro project. Last Friday I had the opportunity to attend EGX London, which I believe is the biggest video gaming expo in the UK.

EGX London

I meet up with my friends at London Waterloo and we then travel together from there to the Excel centre where EGX is being hosted. One of my friends is in the very early stages of developing a board game of his own so it was nice to share my insights with him, regarding the development process and some of the things I have picked up throughout this two year project.

Unlike the previous expos I went to, this one was all about relaxation and checking out new games. I wasn’t tied down to a stand, but rather free as a bird to do as I wished. We played through a variety of video games on several consoles and also attended a couple of video game talks throughout the day which were of interest.

I had the opportunity to try a steam deck which was an okay experience. The handheld was too big and clunky for my personal tastes, though I am a guy who grew up with the original Gameboy through to 3DS, the latter of which I think is pushing the boundaries on console size. Still though, the graphics were solid, the sound was good and the gameplay was fluid.

There was also a dedicated area for board games which was a lot of fun and we ended up spending a decent amount of our day there playing through games which were simple on the surface but which had a surprisingly deep level of strategy to them.

There were also a couple of schools which had sent their students to EGX for a field trip, which I thought was so awesome. I only wish I had those kinds of opportunities when I was a kid. It just goes to show how much more valued the computer sciences and STEM subjects are these days and how they can be applied to the games industry.

Conclusion

All in all, a nice day out and it was interesting to see the current position of the latest video games in development. It was also useful to have an opportunity to play on a steam deck to see what that was like.
